The Community Care Centre in the informal settlement of “Smasher Block”, reaches out to about 20 000 people. This site serves as a Drop in Centre for the orphan and vulnerable children of Smasher Block. Any children identified as being needy, are referred to this service. Referrals come from the local school and preschools, the local Primary Health Care clinic, Home Based Carers from various NGO’s, the Ward Councillor and his committee and individual community members.
Presently, there are 67 such needy children that are getting monitored by the three Child & Youth Care Workers, the cook and the Project Manager. Regular home visits are conducted to ensure that these children are receiving adequate care and support within their homes. Where there is a physical need at their home, Thabang provides support through food parcels, toiletries, clothing and school uniform. Sometimes, when the need arises, the Thabang staff will also physically help with washing, cleaning and cooking for the children at their homes.
The school going children attend the Drop in Centre programme after school.
The Drop in Centre provides:
- A daily cooked meal
- Support with Homework
- Sporting activities
- Arts and Drama
- Cultural Activities
- Life skills trainings
- Assessment and monitoring of each child and where applicable referrals to specific service providers
The centre’s vegetable garden provides fresh vegetables for the kitchen and any needy household. The DiC children learn how to grow their own vegetables as well.
